Fitting your kitchen handles on cupboards and doors is a very simple project that most any do-it-yourself-er can complete. The time you take to prepare for the task will make the job go even more easily. Check to see what tools you have available, and then determine which of the different ways to mount handles will work best for you. Check into the separate ways, so you will know which one is closest to your skill level, and uses the tools you have handy.
If you don't keep a full tool box in your home, the first option for installing handles may work the best for you. Use a piece of cardboard and hold your handle up to your door. Measure the position you want the handle to be in, and plot that on the card. You can do this by measuring the distance from the edge of the door or drawer to each hole. Make sure the holes are evenly spaced from each side. If your handle is of a knob style, you'll only need to measure out one hole. You may want to test your card template out on an extra piece of wood to make sure the holes are evenly spaced so that the handle will be positioned evenly.
Next, you will need to hold your template up to the door, and apply masking tape to hold it where you want it. Hold a block of wood to make sure that the card is correctly positioned. When you have the card in place, use an awl and push it through the holes you marked on the card, as the hole positions. Mark those points on the door or drawer. If you don't have an awl, you can use a wood screw or a skewer – anything that is sharp and that can be used to mark the drawer or door. Then remove the card, check the holes to be sure they're centered, using the kitchen handles to check. Then you can drill the holes. Screw the handles on the door, without over-tightening them. Mark and drill the other doors, checking for accuracy each time before you drill. Use the back of the card for handles on the left hand side of the doors.
If you have a set square and a tape measure or ruler, you can save time over the first method of attaching handles on kitchen doors and drawers. Place masking tape where the handle will go, and put the handle against the door. Measure where you will want the holes. Use the tape measure or ruler to mark the two spots for holes, making sure they are evenly spaced. Mark your set square with the measurement you obtained from the side of the door. Then run the set square down the door's side, and use a vertical line to mark the position where you want the holes. Drill the holes and then mount the handles as before. Be sure to measure twice before drilling once when you are mounting kitchen handles.
